Lesson 11

Pick an honest night photo

Why it matters

A real night is told with an image from that night. If you use stock, a face that was not there, or a crop that invents the room, the post stops being a record and becomes a false ad. Lesson 7 already asked for one real night post. This lesson teaches how to pick the photo so that rule holds.

What you already know

You need Lesson 7 before this one: 7. One real night post. Lesson 10 closed the first track; the second block starts here with the photo.

Definitions

Honest photo: the light, the space, and the people in the frame existed on that night. Nobody was added. No image from another place was used.

Real light: light from the lamps, screens, or windows of that room. Not a filter that invents another room color.

Clean crop: the frame does not cut the scene so the place looks fuller, emptier, or larger than it was.

Stock: a bought or downloaded photo that did not come from your night. It is out.

Read

Before you post, the photo must pass three tests. First: is the light from that night? If the answer is “it looks like another room,” it fails. Second: does the crop describe the space without lying? A crop that hides an empty room to fake a queue is not honest. Third: are there faces or bodies that were not there? If yes, the photo is not from that night.

Do not use photos from the internet. Do not copy a face from another event. Do not merge two nights into one frame. If you do not have a photo from that night that meets all three rules, do not post a photo. Post text or wait.

Lessons 13 and 19 cover what you never film and how to ask permission. This lesson does not replace them. It only chooses the image you already have.

Correct example

You take a photo from the back of the room. It shows the stage light, a crop that matches the real size of the space, and only people who were there. You post it as a record of that night.

Wrong example

You download a generic club photo because “it looks similar.” Or you crop so hard it looks like a hundred people when there were twelve. That is not a style miss. That photo lies.

Try

Write three rules your photo must meet before you post it. One sentence per rule.

Check

1. What is an honest photo? Light, space, and people from that same night. A common wrong answer is “any photo that looks good.”

2. What is out? Stock, faces from another event, crops that invent the size of the room.

3. What do you do if no photo passes the three tests? Do not post that image. Wait or use text only.

4. What are the three rules? Real light from that night, a crop that does not lie about the space, zero faces or bodies that were not there.

What you can do now

You can explain what an honest night photo is, apply the three tests, and choose not to post when the image fails them.

Lesson 12 continues this thread: write the caption after you pick the photo, not before.
